Testing is studying
In Roediger and Karpicke's classic 2006 experiments, students learned passages either by rereading them or by reading once and taking practice tests. Five minutes later, the rereaders edged ahead. One week later, the practice-test group remembered roughly half again as much. The strategy that feels best in the moment is optimized for a test given five minutes from now — and no exam is given five minutes from now.
Rereading produces fluency: the text feels familiar, so you feel prepared. But recognition and recall are different memory processes, and exams only pay for the second.
